Where to Buy Pure Acetone in Hong Kong: Acetone vs Nail Remover vs Thinner
A customer walked into our Fo Tan shop last week after hunting for weeks. He'd tried several chemical suppliers and struck out at every one. The only thing he could find was nail polish remover at a pharmacy. He needed to clean adhesive off metal parts, and nail remover doesn't do that job.
This happens a lot. People use "acetone," "nail polish remover," and "thinner" like they're the same thing. They're not, and grabbing the wrong one wastes your time and can wreck the part you're working on. Here's what actually separates them, plus where to get real acetone in Hong Kong.
What pure acetone actually is
Acetone (CAS 67-64-1) is a clear, colorless solvent. It mixes completely with water, flashes off fast, and leaves nothing behind. Shops use it for degreasing, cleaning, pulling off adhesive, and prepping surfaces before bonding or paint.
The word that matters is "pure." Industrial acetone is just acetone. That's the whole difference between it and the stuff at the drugstore.
Acetone vs. nail polish remover
Nail polish remover is mostly acetone, sure. But it's a consumer formula, not a straight solvent. There's water in there to cut it, fragrance to kill the smell, and conditioners like glycerin so nobody's nails dry out.
Great for a manicure. Bad for everything else:
- Too weak. Cut with water, it won't touch stubborn adhesive or cured resin.
- Leaves a film. Those conditioners don't evaporate. You end up with an oily layer on the metal that kills your bond or your paint job.
- Costs more. Per liter, it's not even close.
Wiping down metal with nail polish remover before you spray is basically oiling the part first.
Acetone vs. Thinner
Thinner is a blend — usually toluene, xylene, esters, and ketones mixed together and tuned for thinning paint. It's a recipe, and it changes from brand to brand.
Acetone is one compound. Same thing every time. Side by side:
| Pure Acetone | Thinner | Nail Remover | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What's in it | One compound | Solvent blend | Watered-down acetone + additives |
| Flash-off | Very fast | Medium to slow | Fast |
| Residue | None | A little | Yes — conditioners |
| What it's for | Degreasing, adhesive, cleanup | Thinning paint | Nails |
| On ABS plastic | Melts it | Depends on the blend | Barely does anything |
Thinning paint? Use thinner. Cleaning, degreasing, pulling adhesive? Use acetone. Don't swap them.
What people use it for
- Degreasing metal — before welding, paint, or glue, with nothing left behind
- Adhesive cleanup — sticker gunk, tape residue, uncured epoxy
- Cleaning gear — brushes, rollers, spray guns
- Final wipe — right before superglue or epoxy goes on
- 3D printing — cleaning ABS parts, getting bed adhesion, vapor smoothing
- Labs and salons — anywhere you need full strength instead of a retail mix
Heads up: acetone eats a lot of plastics — ABS, polystyrene, polycarbonate. If you're not sure what you're working with, test somewhere it won't show. Metal, glass, and ceramic are fine.
Which size makes sense
Acetone flashes off fast, and a container that isn't sealed tight will keep losing product. No reason to buy way more than you'll use.
- 1 Liter — occasional repairs, 3D printing, small jobs
- 4 Liter — regular shop use, and what most people end up buying
- 18 Liter — production work, big projects, steady burn rate
Storing it without starting a fire
Acetone is highly flammable with a very low flash point. That's exactly why regular stores don't carry it. Keep it simple:
- Original container, cap tight, stored upright
- Cool, dry, good airflow, out of the sun
- Nowhere near heat, sparks, open flame, or live electrical gear
- Away from oxidizers
- Never pour it into an unlabeled container — that's how most shop accidents start
Work somewhere ventilated and don't breathe the vapor. On skin, rinse right away with plenty of water. In your eyes, rinse carefully for several minutes and get medical help.
Where to get it in Hong Kong
Acetone is a flammable good with real storage requirements, which is why pharmacies, supermarkets, and general hardware shops skip it. You need a supplier set up to hold it properly.
