5.5m or 7.5m? Choosing a Tape Measure (Makita B-57211 vs B-57227)
A tape measure (拉尺) is the tool you reach for first on almost every job. Makita's magnetic tape measures come in two lengths, both with a wide 25mm blade.
What both models share
- Metric and inch scales on both sides of the blade: handy in Hong Kong, where we measure in mm but still talk about flats and boards in feet and inches
- Magnetic hook: holds onto steel frames, door frames and conduit, so you can measure alone
- Matte, double-sided printing: less glare under bright lights or sun
- Dura Coat blade coating for longer wear
- Rubber-armoured case with four rivets to survive drops
Makita B-57211: 5.5m
The 5.5m (18ft) model is the compact choice. It covers the width of most rooms in a Hong Kong flat, and it is lighter on your belt.
Best for: home use, furniture, interior fitting, cabinets and everyday carry.
Makita B-57227: 7.5m
The 7.5m (25ft) model measures longer runs in one go: corridors, shopfronts, open-plan offices and site layouts.
Best for: contractors, renovation work and site measuring.
Tips for accurate measuring
- The hook is meant to move. It slides by its own thickness so the reading is correct whether you hook it over an edge or push it against a wall. Don't bend it back.
- For inside measurements, such as inside a window frame, push the case against one side and add the length of the case body.
- Measure twice, cut once.
- Let the blade return slowly. Letting it snap back can damage the hook over time.
