Spanjaard Spark vs WD-40: Which Penetrating Oil to Buy in Hong Kong

Walk into any Hong Kong hardware shop and ask for a rust-loosening spray, and you will usually be offered WD-40. Many electricians, mechanics and maintenance teams ask for Spanjaard Spark instead. Both are multi-purpose penetrating sprays, so what is the difference, and which should you buy?

    What both sprays do

Spark and WD-40 are both light, low-viscosity sprays that:

    • creep into rusted threads to free seized nuts and bolts
    • push water out of damp parts
    • leave a thin film that slows down rust
    • lubricate hinges, locks and other light moving parts

For a squeaky door or a stuck padlock, either will do the job.

    Where Spanjaard Spark stands out

    Electrical work

Spanjaard states a dielectric strength of up to 38,000 volts for Spark, and it is non-conductive. That is why it is popular for drying out damp switches, motors, connectors and vehicle ignition systems, which is useful in Hong Kong's humid spring months and after typhoon flooding. Always switch off power before spraying and let the solvent evaporate before switching back on.

    Silicone-free

Spark contains no silicone. Silicone residue can stop paint, sealant and glue from sticking, so silicone-free sprays are preferred in workshops where parts will be painted or bonded later.

    Sprays at any angle

Its 360° valve keeps working when the can is upside down, which helps when you are reaching under a car, behind a machine or into a ceiling void.

    A non-flammable option

Spanjaard also makes Spark NF, a non-flammable version for areas with a fire or explosion risk. The standard 300ml can is flammable.

    When WD-40 is fine

WD-40 is easy to find in supermarkets and convenience stores, and for occasional household use it works well. If you only need a can for the odd sticky lock at home, buy whichever is nearest.

    Quick guide

    • Damp electrical equipment or vehicle ignition: Spanjaard Spark
    • Parts to be painted or glued later: Spanjaard Spark (silicone-free)
    • Fire-risk areas: Spanjaard Spark NF
    • Occasional home use: either
